Australian Oleh runs for Knesset! Important Note: Neither the ZFA nor its staff, nor this magazine's editorial staff publicly support or endorse any political party whatsoever. This note has been placed due to the candidate's being an Australian Oleh, and not due to his political identification. Ma’ariv, February 22, 2005 “…meet Guy Spigelman, the most outstanding – and nicest – new property in Israeli politics…” Guy Spigelman, an Australian Oleh in Israel since 1994, is running for the Knesset on the Labor party list. His success will see the first Australian Oleh as a Knesset member. Guy is working to bring some of the positive aspects of Australian politics to Israel. He is the initiator of Hofshi Lilmod (www.hofshi-lilmod.org.il), a program to bring the successful Australian HECS system for university funding to Israel and plans to open an “electorate office” where voters can gain direct access to him. Guy's campaign staff are looking for volunteers to assist prior to and on the day of the Labor party primaries – January 17th. Fellow Australian Oleh, Benjy Rutland is coordinating the volunteers and would love to hear from people willing to give time to help Guy place highly on the Labor party list. Guy
explains, “In Israel you don’t run for a
constituency, district or electorate. You run for a place on
a party list. To gain a high enough position on the list so
that I can represent you and the issues that are important
to you in Knesset, I will need to get more votes than other
candidates. That’s why I am asking for your support.” Guy’s CV
